The Congo, in west-central Africa, is bordered by the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, the Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Angola, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is about one-fourth of the size of the United States. The vast, low-lying central area is a basin-shaped plateau sloping toward the west, covered by tropical rainforest and criss-crossed by rivers. The forest center is surrounded by mountaineous terraces in the west, plateaus merging savannas in the south and southwest, and dense grasslands extending beyond the Congo River in the north. High mountains are found on the eastern border. The capital is Kinshasa.
