In Ibadan, Nigeria, Olapade Adeyemo carves nativity figures from the wood of the thorny silk cotton tree, harvested from the forest. Taught to carve by his father, Olapade now passes on the skill to his children, and includes the whole family in the creative process to the extent that one of them has now set up his own retail shop. "This work has been part of our cultural heritage …[it] has been our family's source of livelihood," says Olapade. "The work has provided security for me, my wife and our children and sometimes even the extended family."

Kenya, located in East Africa, is home to 47 distinct ethnic groups. The largest of these groups are the Kikuyu, the Luyia and the Luo. Kenya borders the Indian Ocean in East Africa. With Lake Victoria to the west and coastal plains to the east, much of the country has a temperate climate. To the north are arid grasslands. Jambo! is a traditional Kiswahili greeting. English and Kiswahili are Kenya’s official languages. Tropical fruits like pineapples, mangoes, oranges, bananas and papaya are abundantly available in Kenya. Family is important to Kenyans. In rural areas, multiple generations may share a single home. Kenya’s people are a diverse mix of ethnic groups and religions. Seventy-three percent of the population is Christian, six percent are Muslim and 20 percent practice traditional religions. For ordinary Kenyans, price increases and shortages of basic commodities, water and power have become normal and unemployment remains high.

Sri Lanka, whose name means "resplendent land," is a tropical island nation just 20 miles off the southern coast of India. Sri Lanka's natural beauty belies the ethnic conflict that plagued the nation for nearly 20 years. The Sinhalese, who are primarily Buddhist and represent 74 percent of the population, have been involved in a civil war with the minority Tamil people, who are Hindu and represent 9 percent of the population. A cease-fire agreement between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in January 2002 brought hopes for a peaceful resolution of the 20-year conflict. Once one of the most promising developing nations in Asia, today Sri Lanka is a poor country. Its economy is based largely on agriculture, but the predominantly hilly terrain does not yield enough to feed the population. Sri Lanka imports such basic foods as rice, wheat and sugar while vast tea, coconut and rubber plantations export their products.

Retablos, or image boxes, were originally brought to Peru from Spain, and portrayed scenes of faith and daily life. These retablos join this centuries-long art form. Tiny figurines are hand molded from plaster paste. "Boxes" vary from whitewashed wood to dried out gourds or delicately emptied eggshells - each one covered with intricate, colorful freehand designs. Artisans from towns like Ayacucho, Cuzco and impoverished sections of Lima, Peru have revitalized this ancient craft as a source of vital income that helps pay for food, education, housing and health care.
