Retablos, or image boxes, were originally brought to Peru from Spain, and portrayed scenes of faith and daily life. These retablos join this centuries-long art form. Tiny figurines are hand molded from plaster paste. "Boxes" vary from whitewashed wood to dried out gourds or delicately emptied eggshells - each one covered with intricate, colorful freehand designs. Artisans from towns like Ayacucho, Cuzco and impoverished sections of Lima, Peru have revitalized this ancient craft as a source of vital income that helps pay for food, education, housing and health care.

Woodcarvers in Paete, the Philippines, hand-carved this nativity. Steeped in the tradition of carving, the very name of the town means "woodcarvers chisel" in Tagalog, the local language. The craft that placed Paete on the world map is specifically the carving of "pu-on"-images of the saints. Small pieces of Bitukling or Marang wood are transformed into nativity figures and travel the world, escaping their fate as firewood for cooking. Larger pieces are carved into life-size sculptured saints. Jose Barretto has been a wood carver for 37 years. Consistent work has enabled him to meet his family's daily necessities and send his children to school. As a proud father he celebrated his youngest daughter's graduation from nursing school in 2005. He shares with you a local proverb: "Kapag may tiyaga may nilaga" meaning patience and perseverance brings reward. (In this case the "nilaga" is a tasty meat and vegetable dish.)
