Valentine's Day is believed to
be a continuation of a Roman tradition, the festival of Lupercalia. On
this day, young men would inscribe a scroll with the name of the young lady who
he wanted to be his sweetheart for the year. This pagen tradition was
integrated with the Christian celebration of St. Valentine, the martyr who
penned "your Valentine" at the bottom of a letter.
