It took 95 million years to form the Alpine mountain range which stretches across four European countries, southern France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria. These majestic peaks are popular for winter sports as well as seasonal hiking and mountain climbing. Deep valleys lie between their peaks while dark forests and rushing waterfalls cling to the mountain sides.

Old Christmas traditions are strong in isolated villages that burrow into these craggy mountains. It is not Santa Claus, but Father Christmas who brings simple treats and a few toys, often hand made, to good children while the major emphasis of the holiday is on celebrating the birth of the Christ Child with friends and family members. These small mountain communities rely on each other for survival and remain tight knit out of necessity which in turn keeps their traditions strong and alive as is clearly evident at Christmas time.
