"An antique postcard inspired Santa in the Woods, one the first Santas I ever painted. I painted this image on an old Wisconsin cheese box. This old postcard reminded me so much of the dense forests of Germany and my many Christmases there. Santa has a sack full of toys that are not wrapped, as was the custom at the turn of the century, and holds the freshly cut tree to be erected no sooner than Christmas Eve when candles and homemade ornaments will adorn its boughs. Christmas celebrations at the turn of the 20th century were all the more memorable because Christmas decorations "appeared" on Christmas Eve, like a big huge surprise--just like Santa in the Woods arriving with a slight knock at the door, with all his treasures. Maybe he will stay long enough to put the star on the top of the little tree."
