David Frykman lives and works amidst the cedar
trees and rocky shores of Lake Michigan in beautiful Door County, Wisconsin. He
has been creating his menageries of characters since watching his mother sculpt
small figurines for department store window display in the 1950's.
Davidís first career was as a potter and it was
with clay that he developed his facility for bringing life and vitality to his
creations. While his choice of material has now turned to wood, his high
standard of craftsmanship and his fascination with the unlimited potential of
human expression remains.
Today David carves each one of his characters,
(be they Santas, Wizards, Gnomes or whatever) one at a time, by hand, from
carefully selected blocks of Door County cedar. White Cedar is not the easiest
wood to carve but it I a beautiful wood with marvelous color and grain. David is
careful to allow some of the Cedarís natural beauty to show through the various
oil color stains he uses to finish each piece.
