Guyot Arts, LLC Biographical Information
Guyot Arts, LLC is owned and operated by Tom and Gretchen Guyot in Portland, Oregon. Tom has been a woodworker since earning a MFA degree from the University of Oregon on 1969. Tom spent 18 years restoring antique carousel animals for dealers and collectors from around the United States, often carving missing ears, manes, legs, tails, and heads. He first began carving as a fifth grader. Gretchen retired after teaching elementary school for 30 years.
The Guyots love to travel, so upon Gretchen’s retirement, they began taking their truck and trailer around the country to sell their handcrafted items at art and craft shows. Since 1997, they have made 14 trips across the country, traveling to all 50 states and participating in shows in 24 of them. Tom designs and carves all the Santas and tree decorations and Gretchen helps with the painting, does the antiquing and varnishing, and serves as office manager. During their travels, Tom carves in the truck while Gretchen drives and the couple often spends evenings in their trailer painting.
The Santas created at Guyot Arts, LLC are made from basswood and include a number of American Santas. In additions, they offer a series of “Santas of the World”, with gift givers from many countries. Each Santa is hand carved and individually painted, so no two are exactly alike. All carvings are protected by a durable finish.
